Senior Computers is an auxiliary of the SAGE Society and is organized and operated by senior citizens who wish to teach other seniors how to use computers.
Senior Computers conducts classes for beginners twice a year during semester
breaks at CSUN. Classes usually begin on the first Friday in January and July from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and run for six consecutive Fridays.
After a brief orientation in computer hardware, software and language, participants are taught how to use Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Word. Basic skills taught include creating, saving, retrieving, editing and printing documents.
Practice in various segments of formatting a document is provided including setting different margins, line spacing and page numbering. Students are taught various cut and paste techniques.
The fifth and sixth lessons are devoted to e-mail and the internet. Participants are assisted in obtaining e-mail addresses and practice surfing the web.
Participants pay a fee of $25. Because the instructors are volunteers, they receive no pay. Senior Computers uses these fees to fund two $500 scholarships in CSUN's College of Engineering and Computer Sciences.
Applications to enter the class may be obtained by calling SAGE Society, CSUN at
818-831-5064.
